Car Tax Will Stay

At this point, it appears highly unlikely that Gov. Rell will ever be able to get her car tax idea passed. The legislature is overwhelming liberal, so they are disinclined to support it to begin with, and recent news that we may be facing a large budget deficient means that the state government will be extremely reticent about removing any tax.

The state could have a budget deficit of at least $500 million in the 2007-08 fiscal year, which Gov. M. Jodi Rell said today could require some cuts in state services.

If spending continues at its current rate, state budget director Robert Genuario projects a deficit of $500 million to $700 million for the next fiscal year to provide the current level of services.

"We're going to have to talk about what we want as priorities, and what we will be able to afford, and it won't be all at one time," Rell told reporters Friday after a meeting of the state Bond Commission. "It may mean the possibility of some cuts in current services." News Times

I don't think Rell is willing to publicly admit defeat on this, but her car tax idea is all but dead.

  • As there is no organized opposition to spending in the state right now, tax cuts of any kind are doomed. The wealthier suburbs are in a delusional spree of giving gifts to themselves, while the union control of other towns pretty much limits debate. Without a large rural constituency to balance out the big cities, and no entrepenurial centers to balance out big company employee concerns there is no big push for tax cuts.

    Too bad.

  • Cutting wasteful state spending would NOT be a bad idea. Too bad those in Hartford just don't get it.

Less taxes = better economy. What do I know though?

  • Rell never fought for it.

She only proposed it as an Election year gimmick.

She was never serious. She is as big a tax and spend liberal as Don Williams who is the REAL Governor of Connecticut now.
